There should be No Room for Cancer-Linked Ingredients in Cosmetics

There are moments when, as a consumer, you think: “If it’s on the store shelf, it must be safe.”
Honestly? I used to think that too — until I started diving into the ingredient lists of hair and skincare products. That’s when I discovered that some of the substances that had been sold for years were linked to something no one wants to face: cancer.

It sounds harsh. And it is.

What’s really in our products?

The cosmetics industry has, for decades, used ingredients that are either known — or now proven — to be harmful to our health. Think of ingredients like formaldehyde, parabens, coal tar, and talcum powder, which can be contaminated with asbestos. All of these have been linked to serious health risks — including cancer.

The issue? Many of these ingredients were sold for years without any warnings. Some are now banned or restricted in Europe, but in other parts of the world, they’re still allowed. And through international webshops or poorly regulated imports, they can still end up in your bathroom cabinet.

The wake-up call

When I started Pretty Curly Girl, one thing was crystal clear to me:
I would never create something I wouldn’t use on myself — or on my daughter.
No vague chemicals. No toxic ingredients. And definitely no substances that could cause harm in the long run.

That wake-up call marked the start of my mission: to create conscious products that are safe, natural, and truly do good — for people and for the planet.

Why this topic needs to be talked about

I believe it’s essential that we, as consumers, become more critical. That we learn to read labels. That we dare to ask questions. Because if there’s one area where health should come first, it’s in the products we use on our skin and hair every single day.

The good news? Change is happening. More and more brands are being transparent, choosing clean formulas, and saying no to ingredients that were once seen as "normal."
But we’re not there yet.
